Compost tea is a concentrated liquid created by mixing worm castings with dechlorinated water, then aerating this mixture for about 24 hours. When made with good quality worm castings brewed using correct practices, the resulting liquid brew contains more biological activity than the original worm castings. Compost tea can be applied to leaves or soil. Applying compost tea to soil in the root zone stimulates biological activity at the root’s surface, which can enhance nutrient cycling and disease suppression. Applying compost tea to leaves is also useful. Studies have shown that microorganisms in the tea colonize the leaf surface, essentially protecting the leaf from colonization by pathogenic organisms. Compost teas are very versatile and easy to make, but they do not keep very long. It is most practical to make compost teas where they are to be used.
