Sheet Composting

Tomatoes
Sheet composting is a cold composting method that naturally builds top soil in place. This practice is great for starting a garden of any kind, and it can be used on any kind of soil, over any kind of existing vegetation. It requires no tilling and no plant removal. Carbon and nitrogen-rich materials are layered on a stretch of ground destined to become a garden. After a few weeks enough decomposition has occurred that some plants can be added to the system. We supply the composting mix, making the practice easy and accessible to everyone, even if you don’t own a herd of horses or collect mountains of leaves in the fall. Under some conditions we can use composting worms to help this process along.

If you are interested in sheet composting but are unsure how to do it or simply do not have enough time, we at Soil Stewardship are available to help! Contact us to set up a consultation. Prices will vary depending on the size of the operation.

Equine Composting

Barn
Horses are beautiful all the time, and they produce manure all the time. Fortunately, there are some safe and sustainable ways to deal with this useful byproduct. Soil Stewardship can work with your equine operation of any size, large or small, to set up a system tailored to your situation which will manage manure and control smells. With your input, we design and set up the system that is customized for your location, feedstocks, equipment, and space. We provide on-going support for you to successfully manage the system. Depending on the location, we can provide on-going, hands-on compost management if needed.

We are also experienced with the use of compost tea made from compost on horse pastures. We can design dual compost/vermicompost systems, which can provide you with the raw materials to make a liquid extract from compost known as compost tea, which can be highly beneficial to pastures and hay fields. Ask us how!

If you would like to divert horse manure away from the landfill and rather turn it into something wonderful for the earth, please contact us. Consultation prices will vary depending on the number of horses and the extent of the service.

Soil Stewardship is a Colorado business that is committed to local, sustainable, and organic practices. We offer consulting services and sell a variety of products that are great for soils, plants, and the environment—and by default, this makes them great for you too!
