INGREDIENTS
Living Soil Worm Castings is crafted with leaves, manure and composting worms. Each batch undergoes biological processing involving a heat phase to reduce weed seeds and pathogens, followed by a cool phase with red wiggler composting worms (Eisenia fetida).
Description
Living Soil Worm Castings is made at our farm when partially finished compost is fed to our worms. All of this material passes through the digestive tract of many worms. Worms have a complex digestive system which produce castings rich in microorganisms and other biological diversity. The biology includes bacteria, fungi, nematodes, protozoa, and more. Researchers are finding that this diversity is very important for the health of our soils, and it can impact the soil not only biologically but physically as well. Worm castings have been shown to increase soil aggregation which in turn enhances root growth, pore space, and water holding capacity. All are important for building soil and plant health.
Worm castings contain nitrogen which is readily available for use by plant roots. It also contains plant growth hormones. These help plants grow large sturdy root systems and flower sooner. The addition of worm castings has also been shown to help plants resist stress and disease pressures.
Worm castings can be added to soil as a top dressing, incorporated into the soil at planting time, and made into an aerated liquid extract called compost tea, using our Living Soil Compost Tea Brewer. Some studies have shown that when seeds or plants are potted with 20% percent by volume worm castings mixed with potting soil, plants grow stronger, and are more disease resistant.
Living Soil Worm Castings is a sustainable, organic product that is good for soils, plants, animals, humans, and especially good for the future of our planet Earth.
